My job requires me to understand a lot of fashion: to be constantly studying it and understanding new and old terms. Since I started working where I am, I've realized my closet is missing a lot of basic and important pieces. I've included in this list those pieces I have noticed that are a major part of my co-worker's closets. Studying fashion and the different aspects of it has opened my eyes to a part of the world that is actually interested in style. I've become lazy when it comes to what I wear and how I present myself. When I go to class, I get stuck throwing on the most comfortable pieces I can find: torn yoga pants and the shirts I fell asleep in.
I've created this list to potentially bring inspiration to my outfits, so that maybe I can gather better pieces together.
chelsea boots - $35
Chelsea boots are a modern staple that these past couple of years has grown increasingly more popular. They provide a more put together look to outfits, because of their classic sleek design, just like flats. Unlike flats, however, they can be paired with more types of outfits. You can wear them with opaque tights/babydoll dresses or mom jeans and crop tops.
new look patent loafer - $35
new look slip on pimsols - $26
cocktail high leg heeled boots - $130
Thigh high suede boots have become a recent staple in most people's wardrobes. It is unknown whether this trend will transcend quite like combat boots had, going on into winter 2016/spring/summer 2017, but the boots are definitely still just as popular as they were this time last year. They can become more conservative if worn with long cardigans/jackets.
lace strappy cage corset bra - $14.90
topshop a-line corduroy skirt - $58
Corduroy has always been a basic staple in closets. It's popularity comes from it's durability and comfort. I decided on a dark navy pair because of the classic look it provides.
contemporary buttoned denim skirt - $22.90
accordion pleat midi skirt - $24.90
This is more of a risky kind of skirt, as opposed to the corduroy pair. It's still just as versatile, though, and provides a different kind of aesthetic than the corduroy. It's a more flowy piece that can be worn with a short, bulky leather jacket.
moto mid-blue mom jeans - $70
Such a staple. I've actually always detested mom/boyfriend's jeans. I found them unflattering, but in all honesty now I consider them to be such an essential part of a modern girl's closet. They are both comfortable and chic, paired with a tight, mustard colored top and some chelseaboots or a white tank top and a suede black jacket.
contemporary boxy cuffed sleeve shirt - $15
contemporary tied-bow blouse - $19.90
free people 'exclusive' faux leather jacket - $168
I try to maintain by position on animal's rights as much as I can by not participating in wearing animals. I'm against leather, but I understand the durability and general quality of possessing leather jackets. However, I'll still opt into getting a faux leather jacket over a real one. It took me a while to find a good faux one, but this one embodies exactly what I would want from the jacket. I'm not the type of person that likes tight outerwear; I much prefer wearing my dad's vintage, bulky denim Levi's jacket to my mom's tailored, more feminine Gap one. The same goes for leather jackets. When I was looking for one, I kept in mind my own personal style and how I would want the jacket to fit on me, and that was essentially how my favorite denim jacket fit: large and boxy.
ma1 bomber jacket - $110
These are becoming even more and more popular. I'm not opposed to labels, I just don't particularly care for having one that says adidas or nike on it. I've seen these styled in really cool ways, with pins and patches attached to them, zipped all the way up over true blue jeans and basic pimsols.
petite moto cord pinafore dress - $75
moto denim pocket pinafore dress - $30
This shape in dresses has become incredibly popular these past couple of months. With this kind of overall shape, the dress is perfect as a layering piece. You can wear a sweater underneath, a long sleeved shirt, blouses, etc. They're easy to dress up or down.
socks with sheer heart design - $7
heartbreaker purse - $52
vintage leather bagpacks
It's impossible really to find the type of vintage backpack I'm looking for. One that is either black or brown, smaller in dimensions than a piece of paper but still thick enough to fit my basic necessities that I keep constantly on me. I think backpacks have quickly replaced cross-body bags, which unfortunately I purchased in bulk before the rise of smaller, utilitarian backpacks came more in style. I would rather the backpack have a leather looking finish but be faux, however, that's nearly impossible when it comes to older looking pieces. So many of my co-workers possess these, so I hope that one day one of them will come into the store that I can call my own.
new phone case
Right now my phone case is one of those clear ones that everyone has. I feel like phone cases are something that add a lot of personality to someone's overall look. They're so unimportant, but I'm boring and I want to be more exciting. I like those jelly ones that kind of look like this:
But I haven't really found a particular design that looked original enough or that I liked enough. There are a couple of non jelly ones I also liked:
I hope this provided some inspiration for someone else out there. I'll update if I get any of these items (or any like them)
xx
